Into the meadow

Into the meadow

Stage 1

We saw some incredible wildlflower meadows in the States, especially around Townsend in Montana and in the foothills of the Rockies. This painting started life with a bull elk parading his hareem down through one such meadow, but he dominated the piece too much, so he had to go! The two female elks ironically then seemed to spring to life once he was gone and provided a great sense of space in which they were about to venture.

I want this painting to be about how I remember those meadows first and foremost - the smells, the swaying Columbine and Paintbrush - the elk are really passengers passing through. I love depicting generic treelines, it's becoming a bit of a habit for me to play around with my colour palette when painting them. Cadmium orange will play a big role throughout the canvas, but mostly in the elk themselves, alongside opposite blues to give eye 'guiding' lines in the shadows from the trees outside the canvas pushing the elk forwards.

Lots of flowers to do *eek* and a long way to go yet....!
